While you are at work you sometimes do Not realize at all how strongly you are engaged In a certain theme. Take for instance this birdman, made on the spur of the moment. He shows the contrast between the heavy and the light. The light is translated here into a big bird’s mask, which encloses the head like a hood, whereas at the bottom the familiar heavy human feet that only with great difficulty can release themselves from the earth. The birdman would not be out of place in a ballet. His tail is a significant detail. It is in fact a compromise between two poles that could be defined as freedom and restraint.
