Is ‘Girl and the dance’ really a fine sculpture, I wondered. It is so plump and heavy. Then I tried to take away the heaviness, not by making the feet smaller and lighter, but by adjusting the pose in such a way that the heaviness vanishes. Again my conclusion was: it is not in fact a fine sculpture, but a moving one, precisely because of the contrast between the heavy feet and the attempt to dance.
